A new public mural is scheduled for installation later this month, the work of Evansville artist, Lacy Shotliff. Ms. Shotliff and Ruth Ann Montgomery will discuss the mural and the women that are its subject.

The story about Evansville’s forthcoming new mural is the focus of a fun program Thursday, April 28, starting at 6:30 pm at Creekside Place, 102 Maple St.
Artist Lacy Shotliff and local historian Ruth Ann Montgomery will join forces to talk about the five women whose portraits make up the mural. They are Mary Ewing, Marilla Andrews, Mabel Hall, Sally Hardy Eager and Jean Guidone Wyse. The women, all selected by Shotliff, had significant roles in the history of Evansville.
Mary Ewing, the first woman physician, arriving in 1894
Marilla Andrews, 1890s newspaper publisher and later postmistress
Mabel Hall, 1900s star circus performer with horses and elephants
Sally Hardy Eager, 1970s historic preservation advocate
Jean Guidone Wyse, entrepreneur and business anchor in the 2000s
Shotliff will also talk about her artistic process that produced the fascinating 8-foot contemporary portraits. Last fall, the public had an exciting sneak peek of the portraits in progress when Shotliff produced a
3-minute video and posted it on social media.
The mural is the first of hopefully several murals in a multi-year project sponsored by the Evansville Tourism Commission. The development of public art contributes to a sense of community and place, and the project has received a grant from the Evansville Fund to support the creation of the next mural.
The current mural will be installed on the west wall of Main Street Signs & Graphic Design, 157 E. Main. The west wall faces the open area along the Allen Creek walkway.
Free and open to the public, the 45-minute program on April 28 will include a question-and-answer session. Creekside Place will host a cash bar from 6 to 6:30 pm. Inquiries may be sent to Sue Berg, Tourism Commission, at suebergsolutions@gmail.com or 608-882-0986.... More >><< Less
